Judging Criteria

A panel of judges from Australia, NZ and the UK will undertake the judging of events. Everyone is welcome to compete and will be judged fairly.

The following will give you some idea of what the judges are looking for:

  • Rhythm and timing
  • Style
  • Use of space
  • Facial expressions / sense of fun
  • Musical interpretation
  • Drama between couples
  • Linking of individual moves (ie: how well moves fit together & flow)
  • Footwork & use of arms, head & hand movements
  • Costumes

Remember, this is a modern jive competition. Couples doing other types of dancing styles e.g. rock 'n' roll, ballroom jive, ballet etc will not be positively marked.

In 'single couple' events (excluding People's Choice and Teams) the emphasis is on 'freestyle' dancing; i.e. interpreting the music with little or no set routines or choreographed sequences. One, two or three moves strung together in a sequence is acceptable, but if an obvious multiple move segment is being repeated, either within a heat or during more than one heat, this will not score as highly as a couple who are interpreting the music well and freestyling throughout.
